B2BC is sponsoring an educational program for school age children and
their parents designed to familiarize them with weeds and weed control.
Some of the materials available to attendees are pictured here
(click to see a larger view).
Students
(with parent's consent)
will be able to take away a shoulder bag containing weed and bug
identification and collection tools as well as educational literature.
Also available are resources for home schooling and pamphlets parents
will find useful in weed control efforts.
If the bugs that attack weeds are out,
we will provide a means for attendees to take some home to release on
their own weeds.
B2BC conducted a similar program in 2009.
The children who attended
enjoyed it so much
we decided to orient this year's program toward them.
A presentation on July 14
(see below)
will be oriented more directly to land owners.
Michelle Passmore,
small acreage resource technician with the Gallatin County Extension,
and Justin Runyon,
a research entomologist with the USFS,
will lead a short hike and discuss weed control techniques including
biological
(insects),
herbicides and mechanical
(mowing and pulling).
They will answer questions participants may have regarding their own
situation.
The hike may cover up to two miles and traverse steep,
brushy terrain.
Wear appropriate boots and clothing.
Bring things appropriate to a day hike
(hat, sunscreen, water, ...).
The location is immediately before the 7 mile marker coming from
Bozeman.
It is across from Kelly Canyon Road and the Lower Bridger School.
Please park at the bottom of the driveway.
